Archive for December, 2008

I never see the end of a year. The year is always with me, inside my heart and my head.  It is a part of my life.  Sure it is true that  2008 is almost over.  But numbers mean nothing to me.  The year has given me:  Happiness. Sadness.  Contemplation.  Love.  Heartbreak.  Work.  Sleep.  Tears.  Laughter.  Joy.  Pain.  It is just life I guess. What is so different about 2008 than any other year?  Circumstances do change, yes, but life is just life. We are all just trying to get by as best we can.  The years are always with us. Don’t make empty promises.  Be true to yourself.  Be strong. So, have you ever heard of a living wall?  The name alone is beauty to my horticultural ears.  The actual living walls are horticultural art for my eyes.  So cool…so cool.  There is something amazing about these living walls.  What a concept!  The combination of artful design with plants that also brings amazing benefits to our lives.  A piece of art for sure.  Finally, an approach to design that starts to break some barriers.  Though we can look back upon the Hanging Gardens of Babylon as the start of  living walls, the future of living walls is here and now in an urban environment.

Check out the living wall on East 86th street in Manhattan at a yoga center called Pure Yoga. It is a 1,000 sq.ft. green wall with a computerized irrigation system.  The units are modular and are installed by pieces.

When I heard about the first living wall in Manhattan last July, I immediately hopped on a train to check it out.  I was honestly awestruck when I approached the wall.  It is absolutely beautiful.  The textures of the different plants stand out and the different shades of vegetation seem woven like a tapestry.  Piece of art for sure.  I took one look at this wall and knew in an instant that I wanted to build them. So began my dream…

The name of the company that manufactures these living walls is called Green Living Technologies.  Check out the website:  http://www.agreenroof.com.  Cool stuff, for sure!!!

Here are some books that have great info on living walls…..

My momma and a peony...

My momma and a peony...

From the day I can remember, plants have had an influence on my life.  They have come to define me as a human being and therefore, they have come to teach me about life and living.  My little hands touched the soil when I was a child and they still do as an adult.  I appreciate the nurturing part of growing plants, the beauty in a flower and the ephemeral nature of a dying one.  I appreciate the care I give to a plant, which I have brought into my life in order to care for others.  Gardening has taught me life lessons and continues to as I grow.  It is my passion, an integral part of who I am as a person.  It defines me.

I would like to teach you about how plants can influence us as humans, how they can teach us to nurture, to care, to appreciate nature and to appreciate our every living moment as if it were our last.  Plants are an art form.  Living art. This blog will show you the beauty of the art of plants….stay with me as I begin this blog…..
